Transcending Space and Time: A Photo Essay

Space and Time; two universal boundaries by which every person and object on the planet is physically governed. It is impossible to, physically, exist in more than one space at any given time, and this is simply a law of the world that we live in. However, this physical boundary can be visually manipulated using the tool of photography. In the series below, the focus was to capture this manipulation. By using prolonged exposure times, the camera is able to track the movement of the subject, over a short period of time, and condense this action into a single image. The final result is an image that has visually allowed the subject to transcend the physical boundaries of both space and time. Now, the next step is to determine why this is significant, and the answer to this dilemma lies within the content of the series. I’m sure at some point everyone has said, or heard someone say, “last night was a blur.” In many cases, such as my own, “last night” extends into weekends, months, or entire recollections of years past. Memories allow ideas to transcend space and time, because they have the ability to fuse multiple events with, what is perceived as, a single period of time. Photography is simply a way in which this concept can be visually communicated. The content of this series revolves around my friends and myself, and how we pass the time during this transitional period of our lives. The images attempt to document this passing of time, or perhaps more importantly, the coming of age occurring within it. These pictures are my memories, and they are blurry. My memories are akin to these pictures in the sense that they both allow their subjects to transcend physical barriers. I like to think of these years as the crossroads (or intersection) of life. A prolonged halfway house between childhood and adulthood, if you will. As you will see, this intersection can, in fact, be dangerous. Yet, it will inevitably be fused in my memory as one experience made up of many. A single period of time described simply by a molding of multiple events, void of any physical barriers.
